Fuel over 30 days old can lose volatility, and can become too stale to start your engines. Several engines that I have worked on were unable to start due to stale fuel. These engines had not been run for extend period of time. The points and ignition system checked out, but it still would not start. If the gas in your tank smells unusual, change it.
If you are storing your scooter for more than 30 days, you want to drain or run out any fuel, which remains in the tank. When fuels get old and stale, it begins to break down and become what is commonly called engine gum, or engine varnish. This gum or varnish is detrimental to the fuel delivery system and more specifically the carburetor of an engine. It can build up and cause a blockage or clog. If this happens, fuel travel through the engine can decrease or altogether stop. For this reason, it is necessary to purchase new fuel every 30 days or less.
There is one alternative to buying new fuel this often. There is a product available at some stores called fuel stabilizer. Fuel stabilizer can be found in stores that sell motorcycle parts, some hardware, and most auto parts stores. This product mixed with fuel, will extend the life of your fuel up to 12 or 18 months. You would not have to drain fuels for storage if you use a stabilizer additive. Follow the exact directions on the container of the stabilizer product.
